The Sun’s Awake

Every morning my daughter runs (literally) to our room. Head to head. Nose to nose. I pretend I’m still asleep. I already know what her first words of the day will be…

“Daddy…the sun’s awake.”

I love this about her four-year old spirit. Full of optimism and wonder.

She’s oblivious to societies woes, Facebook feeds, and politics.

She never grows weary of learning new things.

Life is just beginning for her.

In fact, the way she lives her life reveal the ways I’ve grown old.

She extends these morning moments by getting a little bossy…

“Daddy, get me a yogurt, spoon, and water.”

I remind her to say the magic word.

Please, Daddy.”

My day begins…

Every morning on my commute to work I’ve made it a tradition to look for the sun. Even on the rainy days I know it’s behind the clouds.

My question to you is, “When was the last time you took a stand and meant it?” You weren’t poked or prodded or inspired; you reacted to your broken heart and walked out the front door. Taking steps into an unknown life with the knowledge that you mean something. Your spirit is more than what it says in your social media profile(s). You will do something more than believe; you will act.

Don’t stand or raise a fist in defiance, simply walk into your world and be yourself. Let the spirit inside of you flood the streets of our cities and unleash the person you dream about being at 2 in the morning.

There is no time, no moment, there is a here and now and that is all you need.

My daughter’s words have changed my life. I hope they encourage you too.

“The sun’s awake.”
