My friend and colleague, Alex Nichols, looked up and said, “I think we should pursue B Corp Certification.” In this moment, we were meeting on the edge of a new year and outlining goals we hoped our company would achieve. We didn’t know what to expect, but after eight months of working with B Lab — Whiteboard joined over 2,200 Certified B Corporations (including 2 others in Tennessee) in meeting the rigorous standards used to measure a company’s impact on its employees, suppliers, community, consumers, and environment.

Whiteboard is now the only business in Chattanooga to become a certified B Corporation, and we’re honored to share this accountability alongside some of our favorite mission-driven companies: Warby Parker, Etsy, and Patagonia.

Since we started Whiteboard in 2010, we’ve aimed to be a creative agency with a purpose. We not only desire to be recognized for our creativity and skillset, but also for our commitment to our team, our partners, our community, and city.

I’m thrilled to join other socially conscious companies and work towards the common goal of using business to do good.

To become a Certified B Corporation, B Lab, the nonprofit that certifies and supports B Corporations, conducted a rigorous evaluation of Whiteboard and determined the company met comprehensive performance standards to qualify for certification.

David Brooks reporting for the New York Times states, “B Corporations are a way to transcend the contradictions between the ineffective parts of the social sector and myopic capitalism.” B Corp certification is to business what Fair Trade certification is to coffee or USDA Organic certification is to milk.

We still have a long way to go, but now we have thousands of others companies from which to draw inspiration in making our business a more sustainable and community-oriented entity.

It’s hard work creating business results and positive social impact, but we couldn’t imagine a more worthwhile calling. — Max Schorr, Cofounder and Co-CEO, Good

I couldn’t agree more and am proud to join other value-aligned companies in redefining success in business, so that one day everyone uses business as a force for good.
